The “Carb Bomb”: Overnight Oats

Please make a small donation to the Disabled American Veterans before you eat this yummy meal! They deserve our support. THANK YOU!

This yummy treat was introduced to me by one of my Fitbit friends, Jenny. Thank you Jenny! I eat this for breakfast every day, especially during training periods, because it delivers a whopping punch of 80 grams of complex carbs, 21 grams of muscle building protein, and depending on what you add to it (I like blueberries and raspberries), other essential nutrients. All of that for less than 500 calories! And because you can make them in mason jars, they are easy to take along with you as an on the go snack! It is AMAZING fuel for my runs.

What you’ll need:

  • Mason Jar or Jars and Lids
  • Measuring Cup, I Prefer ½ Cup Size but a 1 Cup Size Will Work
  • Yogurt, I use Oikos ZERO Vanilla
  • Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats
  • Fruit Optional, this Recipe has Blueberries and Raspberries
  • Milk or Almond Milk, this Recipe has 2% Reduced Fat Milk
  1. Measure ½ Cup of Yogurt in to Each Mason Jar
  2. Measure ½ Cup of Blueberries and Raspberries in to Each Mason Jar

    Fruit
I Love Adding Fruit for the Nutrients and Flavor!
  3. Measure 1 Cup of Quaker Oats in to Each Mason Jar
  4. Measure ½ Cup of Milk in to Each Mason Jar

    Ready
Ready to Close Up and Shake!
  5. Close Mason Jars and Shake Vigorously to Mix all of the Ingredients Adequately

    Done
All Mixed Up and Ready for the Fridge!
  6. Place in Refrigerator and Eat After Approximately 8 Hours

While I eat one jar per sitting because I am a big guy that is running a lot of miles, you can split these in to 2 servings. Normally I’ll make up 4 at the same time so that I do not have to worry about prepping every night. It’s delicious and just what us runners need. Let me know if you enjoy these as much as I do, and let me know of any good twists that you come up with on your own, as it is very easy to modify this recipe to your taste! Have fun.

  1. Excellent! I use 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1/2 cup almond milk. Add some cinnamon and a few raisins. I mix the dry ingredients weekly and add the almond milk every evening. I will start adding yogurt to the mix as I now eat it separately. Great suggestion!

    1. Oh! Cinnamon sounds great and is also a natural anti-inflammatory. Great suggestion Rosemary! Thank you. Joe the Runner

  2. Thanks Joe! I have mason jars and lids, 1% milk, yogurt, blueberries, and blackberries. Now I just need the Old Fashioned Oats. I am not a big oatmeal fan but I love everything else. I am always open to trying new things, especially food. Since reading your post, I am trying to be committed to eating clean food, better fuel in my tank. I put clean fuel in my car to make it run well. I should put clean fuel in MY tank (body) to make it run well (lol). I am sure it is better for me than the Egg McMuffin I eat before my races. Yay Joe!!!

    1. Rose, I would say it is better than the egg mcmuffin for sure, BUT, that egg mcmuffin sounds like an excellent after the race treat! Yay Rose!

  3. I have been using this one for the past year it is my breakfast of choice.I love mine with raisian and Carmel extract and I eat with a dollop of pb

    1. Megann, that sounds delicious and the PB will provide extra protein. Good call! Peace, Joe the Runner

    1. Matitza, I have never tried 1 minute oats, but I would imagine that they would work. If you try will you let me know? I am sure that there are other readers that have the same question. Thanks! Joe

  4. Awesome. Thank you Joe! Will definitely have to try this since I normally don’t eat breakfast or lunch and only eat dinner. Bad I know but never any time but this something I can prep ahead of time. So thank you!!

    1. Lyssa, yeah, this is a great way to do 10 minutes of prep and have breakfast ready for the whole week. And since you use mason jars you can take it with you! Peace. Joe
