We’re all friends here right? I mean at least we’re acquaintances. Nothing we can’t talk about in regards to running, fitness, or awesome stuff that people do? Things that help us push the boundaries of what we thought was possible for ourselves. Cool. Me, I’m a music guy. I love it. And make no qualms about it; I use it during exercise and runs. My gear is a set of Bluetooth powerbeats2 by dr. dre. We’re in a relationship, that’s how much I love them. It’s not healthy.
When you scroll through my play list, most of the standards are there to help thump, thump, thump me along, but that’s not what’s interesting. Sure, The Foo Fighters, Kanye West, Jay Z, and Green Day are all very well represented. Why wouldn’t they be? Everyone knows that 180 bpm is what we should all be shooting for to get that adrenalin rush and cadence. Scratch beneath the surface however and there are a few very guilty pleasures. Don’t judge me!
Obviously I am not proud of this, but I do have Bieber fever; a little. I hang my head in shame and admit to Sorry and What Do You Mean. Both tracks are frequented during workouts. Oh the shame! Can it get worse? Yes; yes it can. Carly Rae Jespen anyone? Doesn’t ring a bell? The song is Call Me Maybe. Yeah, I know, this is all bubblegum teenage stuff, but I dare you to listen to that song and not have it in your head all freaking day! And… it makes me happy.
Since we are falling down the rabbit hole, why stop? Let’s move on to the cheesiest of the cheesy. Don’t Stop Believin’ and Faithfully by Journey provide all the cheese you need for a large serving of Nachos! But that’s not all kids, if you need enough cheese for a seven layer burrito, we have Meat Loaf! Paradise by the Dashboard Lights and Two Out of Three Aint Bad. “Baby we can talk all night, but that aint getting us nowhere.” Pass the tissues please.
Enter the Rocky training montage. Gonna Fly Now and Going the Distance are both absolute staples and I don’t even feel the slightest bit embarrassed. (Maybe I should but I don’t.) But unless you are an absolute true Rocky fan, like me, you may not remember the lesser known but ALWAYS present “my world is falling apart” montages! Classics like the beach scene in Rocky III when Adrian asks Rocky “Why’d you come here?” Ohhhhhhhh the drama! My favorite “my world is falling apart” montage is from Rocky IV, and the soundtrack to that little gem is There’s No Easy Way Out by Robert Tepper. Hand held to the sky, THAT song is also on my playlist. “We’re not indestructible; baby better get that straight…” Soooooo good! (Soooooo bad!)
This next and final spoonful of woefulness is a classic from Ricky Martin. She Bangs, and so do I! I bang out the miles and thank god no one can hear what I am listening to. If they could, I’d probably get stoned, run over, or at the very least laughed at!
Phew! That was cathartic. Since I’ve born my soul to you, now’s your chance to bare yours to me. Tell me what guilty pleasure tracks are buried on your iPhone in the comments section. As you can see, I have no pride, so your suggestion just might end up on my play list! Gotta run, there is a documentary about Tay Tay that I don’t want to miss.
